RAMYA

“You are such a darling little kitty cat,” Queen Jessima told Bevya as she tickled the messenger’s chin. Bevya stretched across the Queen of Fertilian’s lap and the clevercat’s loud purrs thrummed off the walls.

“She doesn’t usually get this much attention,” Ramya said, concentrating hard to understand Jessima’s southern Shella accent. The Ferts, thousands of years before, taught the Xayans their language and it had become the primary tongue in Xayy, and later, Peqkya.

The Melokai watched as the small, pale woman fussed over the cat. Her long straw-coloured hair was curled and intricately folded on top of her head. Her potent fragrance wafted about her in a cloud and she wore a long, heavily layered dress that someone else must have put her in.

After all the introduction formalities, tense discussion and arrangements for the Queen’s entourage, it was Gwrlain who had suggested that Ramya speak directly with Jessima. And that only he and Prince Toby Cleland, the Queen’s guard, be present. “Fair,” the Trogr had said, “Two female, two male.” So here they were, in the walled garden.

The southerner had chosen a bench surrounded by sweet-smelling plants and next to a raised pond covered in lilies. The males stood at the entrance to the garden, within sight but out of earshot. The Queen was enthralled by Bevya, stroking her and asking her questions. When the cat replied, Jessima squealed in delight.

“We do not have talking animals where I’m from,” she cooed at the cat, twirling her tail and nuzzling her face. Bevya mewed and licked the Queen’s dainty chin.

“I will need to dismiss her from our presence so we can talk. Bevya, you are no longer required.”

“Oh, what a shame. Good bye, kitty.” Jessima burrowed her nose into the messenger’s neck and Bevya jumped down and sauntered away.

“So, Queen Jessima. Tell me, what is it you want?”

“May I be so bold as to say your skin is incredible, so smooth and… dewy. As if you are illuminated from within,” Jessima gushed.

The compliment took Ramya by surprise, her physical appearance never drew praise. “Umm, yes, thank you.”

“I know this is a shocking question to ask, but I must know… do you ever get pimples? I’m twenty-nine and I still get pimples! It’s so annoying, especially when you have everyone staring at you, nit-picking about your appearance. Am sure you can appreciate that the Queen must look her best at all times. On one important occasion, I woke up with a dastardly red spot in the middle of my forehead! I was mortified, truly. And no amount of horse bone powder or clay paste could cover it up.”

“I look like everyone else. I wear a warrior’s outfit.”

“Yes, you do look terribly fierce! And so comfortable with your body. I’d hate to have so much flesh on show, I’d feel exposed. Your figure is incredible, so… robust. Mine is all skinny with bones jutting out everywhere. I’ve tried to put on weight but just can’t. My mother used to say I eat like a horse, but look like a bird.
